The Countdown

51 days. That's roughly 7 weeks. And that's how long it is until we go on vacation.

All this talk of vacation, plus the warming weather (well, some days), has got me craving the beach. Back in January, I booked us a spot on St. George Island, located in the curve of the panhandle of Florida off the coast of Apalachicola. We've been there before after a long search for a place that is dog-friendly, and we completely fell in love with the place.

There are no condos here, no high-rises, just rows of quaint little beach cottages and larger beach houses, accommodating everyone from a couple to a huge family. And best of all, for us, we get to take Sadie (and possibly Jewels, although at this point, Chris is firmly against it and I'm mostly against it because we want to relax).

The island is about 12 miles long, if that, and maybe 2 miles wide. There's one little grocery store, two or three restaurants and a gas station. Wake up early enough and you see the shrimp boats out catching your dinner for that night! (This sounds like an ad, but it's true.) A guy brings a cart with fresh seafood to the island every morning after the boats have come back into the bay. There are no amusement parks, barely any people, lots of white sand and the water is that nice teal color.

So, I am seriously about to jump out of my skin in anticipation! I don't feel stressed out or anything, but just the idea of a week of lounging, swimming, reading, cooking and seeing the ocean makes me happy inside. I won't be talking on the telephone. I may blog if there's internet connection... but I doubt there is.

Maybe if people can commit, and I mean TRULY commit, to a long weekend getaway, we could all rent a place there sometime. It is 8 hours away though, so that might be stretching it. Oh well! But see how beautiful:

Here, you can see the bridge that brings you onto the island:

And where I'll be sitting, sipping on a Newman's Own fruit drink purchased from a local sandwich shop while listening to Jack Johnson and watching Sadie romp in the waves:

Oh my gosh!! I'm so in for a trip there!! My family spent two weeks at St. George every summer from the time I was 3 until I was 17. I ADORE that place. Walk out to the Cut and watch all the rays swimming around. And I don't know if they are still there, but you have to go to the Dip 'n Deli (DELICIOUS ice cream! Though I think it has a different name now) and some burger place with the word Pelican in the name. Though that has probably changed names, too! As I tell Kole everytime she talks about her upcoming trip to Puerto Rico, I am happy jealous of your trip. So happy you are going - and I can't wait to see photos - but so jealous that I can't stowaway in your suitcase!

You know we'd be up for a group trip, but knowing our flaky friends, everyone else would back out at the last minute. Losers.

Actually, if it's between the second week in June and the last week of July, I wouldn't have a reason to flake. I'm not exactly keen on the idea of Florida in summer though. If everyone else was there, I think I could put up with the heat for a little while, though.

I actually had started to think I just hated the beach. Turns out that I just hate the summer. I loved the beaches in Maine and Alaska where the weather is often just in the 60s during the summer. I really liked the beaches in Georgia in February and March when the weather was in the 60s and 70s.

Rub it in, why don't you!

That looks awesome. Quiet beaches without t-shirt shops, go-kart tracks, and screaming chidren are the best.

Sweet, sweet vacation. You're so close, aren't you?

But Jacob, the whole point is you can lounge on the beach in nothing but shorts, get hot, and then go jump in the cold ocean water.

Same technique works by the pool.

Besides, being non-schoolteachers, we can go in May when it's still not unbearably hot (and the rentals are cheaper).

The beach is all fine and good, but when are you coming to New York!

Just kidding, looks beautiful and very relaxing! We're tossing around the idea of a dog-friendly vacation too, but not quite so far south!

Believe me, I live closer to Florida than you and even here May isn't much different than the rest of the summer when it comes to weather. The rental fees are a really legitimate reason.

Yeah, but you have to use up leave time to go and I get to put my unused leave toward retiring early with the same pension.

And for some reason, I'm not all that big on swimming, or partial nudity for myself.

I would like to take this occasion to point out that I am not a flake. I said from the beginning that I would not be able to do a weekend trip. This is, I think, one of the definitions of responsible.
