I'm a fan of R.E.M. - both the sleep pattern and the band. But when a coworker and I got to talking about the band yesterday, he promptly made reference to this video... and I promptly started cracking up:
Did you watch it? Well go back and watch it if you didn't. It's safe for the work environment, although it may cause some rubbernecking toward your computer screen.
Please pay special attention to the muppet with the long auburn hair, who is of course suppose to mimic Kate Pierson from The B-52s. Kate accompanied R.E.M. in the real song, "Shiny Happy People."
Here's how I imagine the conversation among the band after this appearance on Sesame Street:
Mike Mills: Look Stipe, I think I speak for the whole band when I say you shouldn't be in charge of booking anymore.
Michael Stipe: Oh come on, it was fun! Didn't you like jumping up and down with the monsters?
Mills: Not so much. And singing backup with a muppet was not a career high for me, either.
Peter Buck: I was just glad people could hear my banjo playing more in this version.
Stipe: See, Buck enjoyed himself.
Buck: Well, it was OK. I didn't know what to think when the big monster yelled in my ear that he was "so sad."
Stipe: Geez, it's for kids, guys!
Mills: Well, that's great, but from now on, no more booking for you.
Stipe: So I guess the guest appearance and duet with The Wiggles is off?
Mills: That would be a hell yes!

Hey, there are worse gigs than playing with the Muppets.
I bet most bands would consider this a career highlight. Everybody does SNL and the Tonight Show. How many can say thay did Sesame Street?
Stipe did seem to be enjoying himself a little more, though. Good stuff.
So strange. Yet I'm sure if I were a kid I would have been highly entertained (and not because I was laughing at them, as it was in this case).
It legitimately entertained me. I love both REM and muppets so it's a win-win.
Oh, no! Hide the children! The evil liberal media is trying to turn our boys into homosexuals!
And since Mickey clarified, I feel I should point out that that also was a joke.
What's your point, Jacob? Did that make you feel funny down there?
(Not joking.)
