Move Over Phelps, the Water Dogs are Coming

I had been looking forward to this past Saturday for quite some time, and I think Sadie had been looking forward to it since about this time last year. I took my socializing, water-loving pup to Chattanooga this weekend to visit her best friend and take advantage of a doggie swim event.

Each year, the Humane Society in Chattanooga hosts the doggie swim day. They reserve a huge pool in the middle of one of the downtown parks and dog owners can bring their "kids" for three hours of swimming and socializing - again, two of Sadie's favorite things. So I met up with my friend Lauren, whose black lab Lexi is Sadie's best friend. You think I'm kidding? These two have been on many a walks together, many swimming adventures, many puppy-sitting adventures, and even though they haven't seen each other in a year, they devoured each other with kisses and tail wagging for about 10 minutes when seeing each other again.

So we headed to the pool for the last hour of the swim event and had a blast. We took the girls last year, and the look on Sadie's face upon arrival was like, "Holy crap, is this heaven?" She was excited this year as well, though she was a little more into the socializing than she was into the swimming. Lexi, on the other hand, can smell water a mile away and could swim ALL DAY LONG - especially if there's a toy to fetch.

When we arrived this year, Lexi just ran straight for the water and jumped right in. Sadie gets a little weirded out when there's no gradual in and out of the water, so she waited until "mom" got in to jump in. She knows I'll watch her back and make sure she gets to land when she wants to.

Here are some shots of their fun:

It's hard to take photos when everything around you is wet, but you get the point. Too bad you can't see that when Sadie is wet, it looks like her makeup is running.

You may be wondering why Jewelsies didn't join us. Well, Little Miss Spaz would be way too hard to keep track of with that many dogs around (we're talking 50 dogs or more at all times). Plus, she only very recently decided to get in water on her own free will. I wasn't sure how she'd do in a pool. A calm lake with a shore is one thing.

So after our little party, we dropped off the kids, washed off and went to Mellow Mushroom for an early dinner. For those of you who know Lauren, she's doing great. She's covering the war (not going over to Iraq or anything) plus doing more investigative reporting at the paper there and just that morning had taken the LSAT. Yep, she's a goin' to law school!

We got back to her place to find our beautiful puppies anxiously awaiting a treat:

Needless to say, Sadie slept the whole way back.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I think I spoil my dogs. Just last weekend they both got to go to the lake and play with a huge (115-120 pounds) Great Dane named Moose. I'm talking 30 acres of land and water. Jewels really enjoyed that, too.

I hope we still get to do that after Logan gets here. Honestly, I think I love them too much not to!

Who are you kidding? You know you'll treat Sadie and Jewels at least as well as you'll treat the baby.

I'm glad Lauren is doing well! Say hi to her for me next time you talk.

Nah, they're not spoiled...

Looks like good, wet fun!

Sounds like fun to me! I can totally relate to their excitement.

Mickey, you're a fan of dog swim days, too? I'm a little surprised, I'll admit.

As for the baby on the way, he'll learn to enjoy good outdoorsy fun right along with the dogs. I'm expecting Logan's arrival to mean we actually spend more time on good family outings, not less.

I have a natural aversion to wet dog. I have only ever had outdoor dogs and they got baths about once a quarter. I can't imagine an hour long car ride with one.

Well, considering we give Sadie a bath once a month (any more and it negates the natural oils of their skin) and the fact that it was in a pool, she pretty much just smelled like you or I would after swimming in a pool: chlorine.

Wet dog can smell pretty bad, but I've been around people who have smelled worse.
