How I'm Different

I've realized a few things this week about people. In some ways, I'm right there with you. But in some ways, I'm not. Here's how I'm not:

10. I love dogs more than most people... and I think they know it. Yeah, you're all sick of reading about my dogs or how much I love dogs in general. Well I'm sorry you feel that way (which is a nice way of saying "I don't care"). Growing up as the youngest kid in the house, my dog was always the one who spent the most time with me. Dogs are cool. They are the best listeners (maybe that's because they don't talk), great cuddlers and they are always happy to see you. They keep you active and responsible - if you are a good owner. And they are cheaper than kids. I could go on, but I'll spare you.

9. I really like things clean, neat and organized. If you've ever been to my house or my desk at work, it's pretty obvious. It even carries over to my computer: everything has a file and I don't like a lot on my desktop. It's just the way I work. Maybe I have a bit of OCD. Too bad the dogs negate this a bit...

8. I'm not a huge reader of books, player of video games or massive shopper. Sure, I love a good book and love to get new things. My weekend experience with the Wii was good, too. But in general, I just don't do these things all that often because I have other things that top my priority list, like spend quality time with the people I love, get in some exercise, spend more than 20 minutes eating a meal and working on my house.

7. I am a card-carrying member of the Instruments Club. I love music that uses lots of instruments and have high respect for anyone who can play an instrument well. I don't know anyone else my age that owns CDs of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Benny Goodman or Glenn Miller. Most days, my scan through radio stations disappoints me.

6. I'm really not all that smart, or maybe I should say that apparently I'm not as smart as most of my friends. I'm just a hard worker.

5. Though I love my job, I really consider it something that I get to like doing OK while I make the money it takes to do the real things I love. And this is one area where I think many people could take a note or two. Don't like your job? Most people don't, but if you look at it as the thing that allows you to do the things you really like to do, it's not so bad.

4. I am and will always be my spouse's biggest fan. I'm not saying this to be cute or get brownie points. A lot of people don't give the support they should. I never want to be that person.

3. I don't understand why so many people have to act like they are smarter than you, point out when you are wrong or have messed up (this does not include grammar - that's just help for future writing) or revel in your weakness. If I have done this to anyone, I am truly sorry.

2. I pretty much only enjoy talking on the phone with one person (that would be Shannon; she keeps it lively).

1. This might fall under the organization thing, but in case you haven't noticed, I really like lists.

I think nearly everything on this list sums me up too (and I do own a Miles Davis CD or two). Maybe that's why we get along so well (the list, not the Miles Davis). And I'll try to stop pointing out when you haven't met your blog quota. I just like hearing from you!

I love this list! And it was so GREAT seeing you and catching up this weekend. I can't wait to do it again soon. Rome, here I come!

Hmm. Now I'm wondering if any of this was inspired by our Friday evening. (If you're talking about me, I'm sorry! Please don't hate me!)

Also: You are smart, and I don't know anyone who thinks otherwise.

Steph: We do have a lot in common, huh? Yeah, went you sent that e-mail I almost wrote back and called you David! heehee!

Nicole: It was GREAT seeing you, too! I had a blast! And thanks for helping me pick out some maternity clothes. I really appreciated your honesty!

Courtney: This line of thinking had NOTHING to do with you. I think you're fabulous!

Steph: I mean WHEN...

I wholeheartedly disagree with #6, and since I'm always right you cannot possibly argue with me. Intelligence can't be measured by how much random information you can rattle off.

I wholeheartedly agree with #4, and it's a major reason why I've never regretted marrying you, even for a second.

I'm not particularly smart. I work hard to get what I want. I think it's probably a better trait than just being smart (although definitely not easier). People with gifts often waste them.

And also, lists rock.

To keep in accordance with No. 3, I wasn't going to correct you ;)

I wouldn't have been able to pull off doing a list like this.

I do have Coltrane and a bunch of classical composers on my MP3 player. Not fond of big band or swing though. Just clashes with my personality.

I love the fact that our differences have always brought us together! I love it that we are so different, it keeps things interesting!!!

So, in reply to your list:

I definitely like people more than dogs!

I would love to be organized, but I simply cannot...I am totally jealous of your OCD!

I love to read books and am always in the middle of two or three!

I LOVE big band music and being a cultured music listener--excluding country, of course, but you agree with that :)

I am also a hard worker with a little bit of brains!

I probably love my job too much ;)

I will not comment on #4 until a later date....

#3--Amen sister!

#2--awww so sweet! I only enjoy talking to you and PJ! That's it, everyone else, get over it...But for some reason every time I get off the phone I feel like I didn't let you talk enough;)

And lists? They surve their purpose, but I ain't in love with them!

typos and grammar...eh, who cares! Ok, grammar is important, but you know I am horrible with the typos and to prove it, I ain't gonna spell check this!!!!
